The lake was named for James A. Garfield, 20th President of the United States.

Garfield Lake is located in Hubbard County in north central Minnesota, surrounded by the City of Laporte, Lakeport Township, and Hart Lake Township. 

Area: 959.62 acres

Littoral Area: 521 acres

Shore length: 6.68 miles

Mean depth: 15 feet

Maximum depth: 32 feet

Fish species: black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, burbot, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, rock bass, sunfish, walleye, yellow bullhead, yellow perch, bowfin (dogfish), white sucker, banded killifish, blacknose shiner, bluntnose minnow, golden shiner, Iowa darter, Johnny darter, mimic shiner, tadpole madtom

Directions to access: In Laporte, 5 blocks off MN Highway 200, on the southwest shore of Garfield Lake.
